The building is very old so when you first walk in you're not sure what to expect. The apt is on the 6th floor, but for the French, it's the 5th floor (they count the fisrt floor lobby as floor 0). The options to get to the apt include a wide spiral type staircase lined with red carpet and a the tinyist elevator that I've ever seen, which can only be accessed one person at a time. The elevator is a bit claustrophobic, but worth taking with luggage. Joe can barely fit and Sam told us that they have had guests that literally could not fit in the elevator.
Once you finally get to the "5th" floor, there are 4 apt doors....the Cabernet is the first door to the right of the elevator/stairs. The doors are huge old double doors painted in a blue grey. Both door opens, but you only need to open one.
When I first walked in I was initially pleased with what I saw. It felt very French with high ceilings and beautful moldings throughout.
You walk into a tiny hallway with an updated kitchen on the right. The kitchen is tiny, but laid out nicely with a corner sink (after a few days I'm thinking this sink isn't deep enough and when you wash a dish water splatters everywhere, but I guess we're not here to do dishes) and window that overlooks a courtyard. The decor is very nice and modern (seens like it was recently updated) with granite countertops, new applicances (that seemed barely used) including my favorite applicance......a washer/dryer combo. The kitchen is stocked with nice dishes, glasses, utencils and basic cooking equipment . Sidenote: There is door that you can use to close off the kitchen. It's day 3 and I just realized that behind that door is a wall of additional cabinets filled with extra dishes. I really am very pleased with this kitchen and think it's designed very well....except I would have made the sink deeper.
They also include basic supplies, which I didn't expect, but glad that we didn't have to purchase (garbadge bags, soap, dishwasher soap, laundry, paper towel). On the opposite side of the kitchen is a wall lined with closets. I'm very happy with the closet space in this apt...we have plenty of room for our stuff.
To the right of the kitchen is a bathroom with a toilet, tiny shower and sink. The apt has 2 bathrooms (one is the bedroom), but this is the only one with a toilet. If I were designing this apt, I would have put the toilet in the bedroom bath and made the hallway bath smaller with only a toilet/sink.
Once you pass through the kitchen/bathroom hallway, you enter a good sized room with nice hardwood floors. The room is split into a dining room and living room and furnished in Parisian style decor.
The wall is lined with 2 huge French door floor to ceiling windows which open to a narrow balcony that has a small bistro table and 2 chairs. As soon as Sam left I opened both windows and instantly felt like I was in Paris. The view from the apt looks at the Eiffel Tower and charming building across and street below.
From the living room, you enter the bedroom where you'll find a king-sized bed (which is really 2 mattresses pushed togeter), another tall double window and bathroom (shower/sink). There is a decent closet and built in shelving unit. The bathrooms are updated and crisp and the water pressure in the shower is pretty good. I am also really happy with the towels....seem very new and luxurious.....they also included supplies like toilet paper and hand soap. I wasn't sure what to expect because when you rent a house (like at the beach) the supplies aren't usually included so it was nice that we didn't need to worry about that.
By now I was really tired, but got a second wind and unpacked. We also called our parents (as the apt comes with free wireless and phone calls). We instantly felt at home at the Cabernet and knew that it was going to be wonderful stay!
