We visited the Père Lachaise Cemetery today. We took the #69 bus there, which gives you a nice tour of the city. We bought 2 - 3 day passes, these allow you to ride both the metro and the bus lines. The company that rents us our apartment, Paris Perfect, wrote about using the Paris bus system in lieu of the tour buses. A much more economical option, as well as a practical way to learn to get around the city. They recommend the #42 and the #69, both of which are easily accessible from our apartment, we caught the #69 at the corner of Avenue Rapp and Avenue de la Bourdonnais. This interactive bus map is very handy.
The cemetery is near the Marais District, and straddles the 11th and 20th Arrondissements. Fred Chopin (and no, I'm not being overly familiar, that is how it is listed on his stone) and Jim Morrison are among a long list of famous residents. It is a very interesting place to walk, reminiscent of cemeteries in Savannah and New Orleans, minus the Spanish Moss.
Here are some pictures from the cemetery.
We were then looking to have lunch and walked to a couple of restaurants in the Marais, one that had been recommended by a New Jersey food blogger Tommy Eats, and one by David Lebowitz. Unfortunately both were closed.
We did get some good walking in, and were able to explore this area which is so often explored in House Hunters International. It has an edgier feel than the 7th Arrondissement, and feels a bit like New York City.
We navigated back to our neighborhood via the metro and had a very satisfying (late lunch) near our apartment, where we learned that just because a restaurant has souvenir shops on either side of it, it does not necessarily mean it is not a good place to eat.
